NOTES

2) Data restoration discussion: production priority
- AuAu200_production2_2016, st_sst, st_nosst, P16ij_SL19c
- production_pp200long_2015, production_pp200long2_2015, production_pp200trans_2015, st_physics, P16id_SL19c

Conclusions: production_pp200XXX_2015 restoration will be placed 3rd on the priority list as it is urgently needed by analyzers, while AuAu200_production2_2016 is placed at the end of the priority list.

3) Do these plots need a "STAR Preliminary" label?
- PID (dE/dx, p/E, 1/beta), invariant mass, efficiency, event plane resolution, raw yield vs. pT, etc

Conclusions: the agreed guidance is "The STAR Preliminary label is not needed for plots from which no one can deduce physics messages.". For the examples listed above, no STAR Preliminary label is needed most of the time. There are exceptions, such as an invariant mass plot indicating a discovery of a new particle, or an invariant mass plot with both Jpsi and Psi(2S) yields from which one can deduce Psi(2S) to Jpsi ratio as the efficiency largely cancels for the two particles, etc.

4) Feedback on whether the current PicoDst (P11id_SL19c) for 2011 Au+Au data satisfies PWG needs

Conclusions: will give PWG one more week to check.

1) Feedback on whether the current PicoDst (P11id_SL19c) for 2011 200 GeV Au+Au data satisfies PWG needs
- 2010 200 GeV Au+Au, 2012 193 GeV U+U picoDst production chain option: "picoDst PicoVtxMode:PicoVtxDefault PicoCovMtxMode:PicoCovMtxWrite PicoBEmcSmdMode:PicoBEmcSmdWrite"

Conclusions: no concerns raised from PWGs about the current PicoDst (P11id_SL19c) for 2011 200 GeV Au+Au data. Conveners will also discuss the proposed chain option for 2010 200 GeV Au+Au and 2012 193 GeV U+U picoDst production within each PWG.

2) PicoDst production request: priority list
- New request: Run14 AuAu 200 GeV st_physics, P18ih-MuDst using SL20a or beyond, requested by JetCorr

Conclusions: the new request is currently placed 4th on the priority list along with the other JetCorr request of Run12 p+p 200 GeV data. JetCorr will determine the relative order of the two requests within the PWG.

3) Template for preliminary plots request: template

Conclusions: more comments are brought up by conveners, and we aim to converge within a week

4) STAR policy on Rivet analysis approval
- Proposal: the Rivet analysis code, implemented by PAs, will be approved within the current paper process. For people outside of STAR Collaboration who are interested in implementing Rivet analyses for STAR published results, we welcome any clarifying questions they may have, but do not officially approve these analyses.

Conclusions: conveners agree with the proposed policy

NOTES

2) Data restoration discussion: production priority
- New request: production_pp200long_2015, production_pp200long2_2015, production_pp200long3_2015, production_pp200trans_2015, st_mtd, P16id_SL19c

Conclusions: this new request is currently placed at the end of the queue unless we hear arguments from HF PWG otherwise

3) PWG feedback on the proposed chain option for 2010 AuAu200_production, UU_production_2012 picoDst production:

picoDst PicoVtxMode:PicoVtxDefault PicoCovMtxMode:PicoCovMtxWrite PicoBEmcSmdMode:PicoBEmcSmdWrite

Conclusions: no objections raised so far. We will use these chain options for PicoDst conversion when the time comes.

4) PWG feedback on whether MuDst files are sufficient for embedding analysis, as we do not have enough disk space to save event.root.
- A task force is formed to implement missing MC BEMC information into MuDst: Zilong Chang (SPIN), Matt Kelsey (HF), Hanseul Oh (JetCorr). Members from LFSUPC and BulkCorr?
- Since geant files contain all MC BEMC information, would be the combination of MuDst and geant files sufficient for analyses?

Conclusions: conveners will check with PWG members whether the combination of MuDst.root, geant.root, pythia.root files are sufficient. We will need to remove event.root files.

5) Collaboration meeting: Sep. 21-25, 9-12am BNL time devoted to plenary sessions
- We also suggest each PWG to organize parallel sessions the week before (Sep. 14-18, BNL morning times). Conveners are expected to give PWG summary reports in the plenary session.

Conclusions: conveners will poll PWG members and set up the agenda.

STAR PWGC meeting

2020-09-04 09:30
America/New York
Friday, 4 September 2020
https://bnl.zoomgov.com/j/1619294511?pwd=TkRhZzFjOWZSQnpvUVdGUGFVMmlHdz09, at 13:30 (GMT), duration : 00:00
1) Data production status
- CME group has given green light to Isobar phase-III production, i.e. unblinded full data set. The production team is working on setting it up.
- Run19 19.6 GeV calibration
- Run17 pp 510 GeV st_physics: 31% completed as of Sep. 1st

Conclusions: the production team is working on setting up Isobar production on Cori. The list of runs that SPIN group needs for completing the BEMC calibration comprise about 40% of the total st_physics statistics. While these runs are close to be reconstructed, they will not be ready for the PAC meeting next week.

2) Provisional production in light of 19.6 GeV calibration issue by Mike Lisa
- The m2 splitting issue is irrelevant for measurements of dN/deta in EPD region, v1 in EPD, and etc.

Conclusions: conveners expressed several concerns on making provisional productions with non-final calibrations a general policy: i) could result in several provisional productions for one data set; ii) difficult to track which production is good for which analysis; iii) extra burden on the already stretched CPU and disk space resources. On the other hand, conveners suggested to reproduce the Run19 19.6 GeV calibration production with the latest calibration parameters such that users can analyze these close-to-final data.

3) Issue with recent Run13 period 1 embedding produced on Cori: test sample on RCF was good, but production on Cori failed to pick up the correct data base information.  (slides)

Conclusions: the SPIN group found that correct database parameters were not picked up by the embedding jobs run on Cori, which was not the case for the test sample proudced on RCF. They will inform the embedding team about this inconsistency, and have the embedding dataset reproduced as soon as possible. To avoid this from happening again, it was suggested to produce a test sample on Cori before full production. One should pay extra attention to this issue if the Isobar data are to be produced on Cori given that all the work have been done on RCF so far.

4) PWG feedback on whether MuDst.root, geant.root and pythia.root are sufficient for embedding data

Conclusions: SPIN and JetCorr PWGs confirm that these files are sufficient for their purposes. Other PWGs will bring this for discussion in the next 1-2 weeks.

5) Collaboration meeting
- Junior's day: Sep. 14th
- Parellel session: Sep. 15th - 18th
- Plenary session: Sep. 21th - 25th

Conclusions: the BulkCorr PWG decided to dedicate the weekly PWG meetings in the next two weeks as a replacement of holding parallel sessions between Sep. 15th - 18th.

STAR PWGC meeting

2020-09-11 09:30

Friday, 11 September 2020
https://bnl.zoomgov.com/j/1619294511?pwd=TkRhZzFjOWZSQnpvUVdGUGFVMmlHdz09, at 13:30 (GMT), duration : 00:00
1) Organizational news
a. HF co-conveners rotation: Barbara Trzeciak (incoming), Zebo Tang (outgoing)
b. BulkCorr split into two PWGs
- Correlations and Fluctuations (CF): Xiaofeng Luo, Hanna Zbroszczyk
- Flow, Chirality and Vorticity (FCV): Jiangyong Jia, ShinIchi Esumi, Prithwish Tribedy

Conclusions: many thanks to Zebo for his dedicated work as a co-convener of HF PWG. Warm welcome to new co-conveners, Barbara, Hanna, Prithwish.

2) Run13 Pythia+zero-bias embedding issue
- Both test sample and full production were done on RCF
- The cause was identified to be due to a change in the xml script, in which the DAQ files are copied to $SCRATCH/$INPUTFILES while the code expects $SCRATCH/
- This issue should exist also for the test sample. Why wasn't this caught?
- Need PWGs' help to setup standard QA macro for Pythia+zero-bias embedding samples to check both log files and MuDst. The current QA macro is designed for single particle embedding.

Conclusions: SPIN PWG will follow up on why the issue was not caught in the test sample. Will coordinate between SPIN and JetCorr PWGs to develop standard QA macro for Pythia+zero-bias embedding samples to be run by the embedding team.

3) Data production progresses
- Data production: 35% done for Run17 pp 510 GeV; Isobar final production is expected to start within a week on Cori. ABC and GPC will determine whether data will be given to blinded analyzers in small chunks or one big chunk.
- MuDst -> PicoDst: Run16 st_physics expected to finish in a couple of weeks. Will start to restage picoDst data to DD now, can free up the NFS disk space

4) New restoration request: priority list
- BulkCorr: AuAu200_production_2011, P11id_SL19c

Conclusions: the new request is to be restored as the next one in the queue. Once the picoDst files are restored to DD, corresponding MuDst files will be removed.

5) Collaboration meeting: https://drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/conference/timetable/talk/51836
- Please start to populate parallel sessions. Even placeholders are helpful
- BulkCorr: please link this week's session to the page as well
- Management-convener lunch meeting: Friday (Sep. 25th) 1-3 pm BNL time

Conclusions: PWGs will add their parallel sessions to the drupal page either today or tomorrow.

1) Paper preview: Differential measurements of jet substructure and partonic energy loss at STAR
- Brief introduction from the PWG conveners (5’) [Hanseul]
- Paper proposal (15')  [Presentation]
- Open discussions (35')
- Summary from the conveners' panel (5’)
Paper draft: https://drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/system/files/auauRun7_TwoSubJet_prc_paper_v1.pdf

NOTES

2) New data restoration request (priority list)

AuAu 200GeV run 2001 st_physics MuDst data with P02gc, P02gd and P02ge production;
- ProductionMinBias
- MinBiasVertex
- productionCentral
- productionCentral600
- productionCentral1200
Since these data is only few million events it is very fast done to copy them and takes little space.

Conclusions: the new request will be placed second on the priority list given its needs by the analyzers and small size.

3) Spitting BulkCorr PWG as it is becoming very large
- Proposed splitting
Group 1: flow, correlations, CME/CMW
Group 2: femtoscopy, fluctuations, polarization/spin alignment
- How many conveners shall we have for each group, 2 or 3?

Conclusions: the convener panel supports this proposal. It was suggested to start with two conveners each group, and recruit more if needed at a later time. BulkCorr conveners will bring this up for discussion at the PWG meeting next week. If no strong objections are raised, the management team will go ahead with it.

4) Run19 19.6 GeV calibration: still investigating m2 splitting of positive and negative tracks. No definitive timeline.

5) Post PWG weekly meetings on STAR’s drupal event page, https://drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/event/
- Also for physics focus groups (CME, dileptons)

Conclusions: conveners will add their weekly meetings to the durpal page such that there is a central place for people to find information about these meetings.

6) reminder
- Feedback from PWG members on the impact of reallocation of CPU resources to COVID-19 research (STAR resource 150% -> 115%)?

Conclusions: conveners will continue gathering feedback from PWG members. We will discuss this next week.

STAR PWGC meeting

2020-07-24 09:30
America/New York
Friday, 24 July 2020
https://yale.zoom.us/j/94765401892?pwd=MG50My9ZTkVJaEpHRmluYUk0WEcyUT09, at 13:30 (GMT), duration : 00:00
1) Procedure of approving preliminary results
- What additional documents are required for preliminary results? Do we need an independent body to review these documents?
- Who approves the preliminary results, the conveners, a committee or the whole collaboration?
- Shall we establish a deadline for approving new preliminary results?
- Shall we assign a ID for each preliminary results and collect plots in a central place?

Conclusions:
- We will prepare template slides, which include essential information related to the analyses, to be used for preliminary result requests. If PAs prefer to include these essential information in a note, that is also fine.
- It will still be conveners who approve preliminary results
- Both PAC and conveners will remind people about the rule that slides/posters should be sent to PWG 2 weeks before the conference starts, and to star-talks 1 week before. No additional deadline will be set at this point.
- Conveners support this idea, and PAC will discuss with relevant people to setup the repository. It was also suggested to provide some general guidance on the formatting of preliminary plots.

2) Impact of reallocation of CPU resources to COVID-19 research (STAR resource 150% -> 115%)
- In the past three months, STAR uses on average 103% of its owned resources. Compared to the 115% allocated to us, the lower percentage number is due to that some of the nodes are reserved for data production, which were not used. Analysis could not take those nodes.
- As per the value and benefits of the COVID-19 research, a discussion across many labs has taken place some weeks ago
- Feedback from PWG members?

Conclusions: longer, but still tolerable, waiting time for jobs to start have been experienced by analyzers across different PWGs. PAC will follow up with Jerome in terms of value and benefits to the COVID-19 research in a few weeks.

3) Disk clean up on DD
- Obsolete PicoDst datasets on DD: https://www.star.bnl.gov/protected/heavy/dongx/SC/picoDst.html
- MuDst: input from SPIN group

Conclusions:
- No objections raised with regard to deleting obsolete PicoDst datasets on DD
- SPIN group will send out the list of MuDst datasets that can be removed from DD on July 25th.

4) PicoDst files for 2011 Au+Au dataset have already been produced (P11id_SL19c) with the chain option "picoDst PicoVtxMode:PicoVtxDefault PicoCovMtxMode:PicoCovMtxWrite", and available on NFS. Does this satisfy PWG's needs?

Conclusions: conveners will follow this up with PWG members. If the current version is sufficient, they will be moved to DD and corresponding MuDst files will be removed.

5) When to release data tables on HepData to public?
- Current: after a paper is submitted, PA uploads data tables to HepData and GPC chair reviews and approves, after which they are released to public.
- Concern: people could use old versions of data tables, and not aware of updates during referee process in case this happens.
- Proposal:
after a paper is submitted, PA uploads data tables to HepData and GPC chair reviews and approves. If there are changes in data points during the referee process, PA updates data tables and GPC chair approves. After a paper is published, the data tables will be made available to public.

Conclusions: conveners support the proposal.

Reminder:
i) Post PWG weekly meetings on STAR’s drupal event page, https://drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/event/
- SPIN, JetCorr, BulkCorr

Conclusions: weekly meetings for all PWGs are now available on the drupal page

NOTES

2) Discussion: production priority
New request:
MuDst to PicoDst: pp200_production_2012, P12id (JetCorr): new track-tower matching scheme in SL20b and above
Data restoration:

- production_pAu200_2015, P18ih, st_ssdmb, MuDst
- production_pp_2015, P16id, st_ssdmb, MuDst
- pp200_production_2012, P12id.SL18f, st_physics
- AuHe3_production_2014, P18if.SL18f, st_physics

Conclusions: the new data restoration requests will be placed at the highest priorities since they are urgently needed by analyzers. On the other hand, the picoDst production of Run12 pp 200 GeV data is appended to the current list.

3) Run19 19.6 GeV (production time 1- 2 months when run concurrently with Run17 pp 510 GeV data production)
- PicoDst of calibration production available: /star/data05/pwg_tasks/picoDst_Run19_19p6_Calib
-- PWG delegates can use it to tune their codes
-- Everyone is welcome to look at the data and report their findings to QA board (
star-qaboard-l@lists.bnl.gov)
- Splitting of m2 distributions seen for positive/negative charges. Experts investigating this.
- What is the impact of eTOF calibration for this data set?

Conclusions: the TPC and TOF experts are investigating the m2 splitting. On the other hand, the time-dependent eTOF calibration could be ready in 1-2 weeks if no surprises arise. The consensus is that the official production should start once TPC and TOF calibrations are ready. We will not hold up the production for eTOF calibration, in case not ready, given the limited time before PAC meeting, and that the time-dependent eTOF calibration can be applied with a reproduction of PicoDst files.

4) Run17 pp 510 GeV production
- st_physics: a list of runs to be produced first provided to the production team
- st_W: any QA feedback?

Conclusions: the charge ratios in st_W look healthy now. Will need st_physics production to carry out BEMC calibration, which will be then applied to st_W stream on the fly while analyzing existing MuDst files. The SPIN PWG will make sure early QA of st_physics will happen when a sample is produced.

5) Data production and transfer
- produce a sample
- ask QA board to check and sign off
- resume production and get it all done
- Move to distributed disk automatically
-- SPIN data sets: MuDst and PicoDst
-- HI data sets: PicoDst
-- st_upc: MuDst

PWG delegates: converge on the set of QA histograms for each PWG

Conclusions: conveners agree with the proposed procedure. The details of QA board sign-off procedure is being worked out.

6) PWG inputs to BUR: cases for Au+Au 2023 and 2025 running
- BUR due by the end of August
- What unique measurements STAR can do using these datasets?
- Suggest to brainstorm this at PWG meeting in the next few weeks, and send reports to BUR committee (Ken (Kenneth.Barish@ucr.edu) and Frank (geurts@rice.edu))
- sPHENIX running plan

Conclusions: conveners will bring this up for discussion at respective PWG meetings

7) Impact on user analyses due to reduced CPU allocated to COVID-19 related research

Conclusions: conveners will poll PWG members on the impact, while Rongrong will collect more information from RCF.

8) Old/obsolete submission clean-up
