• Because STAR is a

  • Multi purpose detector (p+p, Au+Au, various energies)
  • A multi-detector system with an evolving configuration (TPC, FTPC, ..., TOF, E-EMC, SSD, PMD)

• And reconstruction time

  • Seemed to increase at each layer (SVT, SSD, ...)

• And the analysis demands

  • A large kinematic range of interest (0.15 < pt < 20+ GeV/c; ||<4.)
  • Large range of physics analysis

• While the old framework (TPT/EST tracking)

  • Was a mixed of FORtran and C++
  • With limited documentation and “lost” developers
